New York celebrated the Great Martyr's Day and International Mother Language Day with due dignity. On the day, expatriates paid tribute at the temporary Shaheed Minar erected in several places in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx of New York City in the first hour of the 21st.
Representatives of more than fifty organizations paid their respects in an orderly manner at the Tibetia Auditorium in Woodside, Queens. Various organizations paid their respects at the Shaheed Minar set up in the Bangladeshi commercial neighborhood of Church-McDonald. Expatriates also flocked to the temporary Shaheed Minar set up at the JBBA in Jackson Heights' Diversity Plaza and the Church McDonald in Brooklyn at midnight. In addition to performing Ekushey songs, the context of the day was discussed and all expatriates were urged to remain united in the spirit of Ekushey.
Prizes were distributed among the winners of the children's drawing competition at a ceremony to commemorate Language Day organized by the organization at the All County Healthcare Group auditorium in Jamaica. The organization's head Abdul Quader Shishir presided over the ceremony which was attended by BNP leader Gias Ahmed as the chief guest.
The biggest events were organized under the banners of Bangladesh Society, Dhaka University Alumni Association, Chittagong University Alumni Association, JBBA, and Ekattorer Prohari.
