The European Union (EU) gave bad news to political asylum seekers. No one will get political asylum as before. Along with that, the opportunity to seek refuge through fraud is closed.
After four long years of debate and discussion, this alliance of 27 countries reached a consensus on the new immigration law. Through this, they mainly focused on decisions to prevent irregular, illegal immigration and human trafficking.
The new law recently approved reform proposals for political asylum and essential immigration policies. Where there are ten clauses.
There is strict security at the borders of every country. And responsibility will be shared by the member countries. In addition, requests for political asylum will be verified outside the border. If you don't accept it, you have to return to your country. There are shelters at the border of each country. If a member country does not agree to take in asylum seekers, it must fulfill that obligation with money or other resources.
Charles Whiteley, head of the EU in Dhaka, said that no one will get political asylum as before.
He said, within 12 weeks it will be decided who will stay and who will return. Every political asylum seeker will be given a lawyer. There is no more opportunity to take shelter by cheating. But of course applicants will be given the opportunity to stay in the country where there is a threat to life. This law will be effective from the United States.
As the new rules will reduce illegal immigration, the path of skilled workers will also be smooth. Charles Whiteley said, I think there is a great opportunity for Bangladeshis , especially for the skilled and talented. Now they can apply for immigration through legal means. Besides, good career, better quality of life will also be ensured. At the same time, the government's efforts to prevent human trafficking will also be easier to carry forward.
However, the new law has been strongly criticized by Europe's hard right and left. The Hungarian government is also on that list. In contrast, policymakers have argued that by 2023, nearly 1.1 million asylum seekers would have crossed into Europe from Ukraine alone. As an annual average that is 77 percent higher than in 2022.
