The Immigration Department has detained 602 illegal immigrants including 214 Bangladeshis in Malaysia.
They were arrested today Saturday at noon in Section 25 Taman Sri Muda area of Shah Alam, Selangor state.
While verifying the documents of 1 thousand 91 foreigners, 602 (male and female) immigrants without valid documents were detained.
In an interview given to the country's media The Star Online, Selangor Minister Datuk Seri Amiruddin Sari said that among the 602 people detained, 213 men and 1 woman are Bangladeshi immigrants.
Apart from 214 Bangladeshis, the detainees include citizens of Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Algeria.
They were detained under the Immigration Act 1959/63, the Passport Act 1966 Immigration Regulations 1963, and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling Act 2007.
The minister said operational planning has been done since last March after seeing the trend of foreigners in this area. The initial results were surprising that more than 60 percent of the 1,911 foreigners were illegal immigrants.
