Presenting Bangladesh by dancing and singing in red and white sari in Times Square

More than 500 women including Bengalis participated in the 'Sari Goes Global' (Sharee Goes Global) event at the world-famous Times Square in New York City. An organization from Britain called 'British Women in Sarees' took this initiative on Saturday with the aim of promoting the saree as an important part of culture and heritage, empowering women and keeping the weaving industry alive. 

After the event with women wearing sarees in different parts of Britain, this year's event was more extensive with the New York organization 'Uma' run by Dr. Rita Kakti-Shah aiming to promote it globally. 

Many countries including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Uganda, Trinidad, Britain, America participate in this event. Nazneen Hossain and Dr. Under the leadership of Subarna Khan, consisting of hundreds of women from different parts of America and Britain, the Bangladesh team dressed in red and blue, wearing native sarees, dancing and singing presented Bangladesh to the world. Different countries circled a section of Times Square to the beat of drums with flags in hand, similar to the Olympic parade. 

On behalf of the Bangladesh team, Rubina Aziz and Tahera Kabir highlighted the introduction of saris from different regions of Bangladesh through placards. Like Dhakai Jamdani and Muslin, Rajshahi Silk, Mirpur Katan, Nakshi Kantha, Tant/Manipuri. At the end of the parade, all the countries perform a dance one after the other. Bangladesh team's dance performance to the song 'Chalo Bangladesh' won rave reviews. The new generation growing up in different parts of the world should accept the traditional saree as a part of their life.
