The inaugural show of the play "Trident Moon" was staged at the Crow's Theatre in Toronto, Canada. The play was written by Indian-origin playwright Anushree Roy and directed by Nina Lee Aquino.
Bangladeshi actress Afroza Banu has captured the audience's attention by playing a special role in this mainstream Canadian play. She currently lives in Ottawa, the Canadian capital. It was there that the play's production company, Crow's Theatre, and the National Arts Centre, Ontario, approached her about acting in Trident Moon.
In 1974, the Indian subcontinent was divided into two independent states on religious grounds. Due to this, a large population was uprooted from their homeland. They fled from one country to another, seeking refuge after losing their homes and resources. The English dialogue play 'Trident Moon' is based on the conflicting lives of one such group of six female refugees.
The play, which revolves around the precarious journey of three Muslim and three Hindu women who flee in a coal truck, was inspired by the fact that a mainstream Canadian drama group had chosen a play for Canadian audiences that dealt with sensitive stories from the subcontinent.
"Playwright-director Mahmudul Islam Selim, while expressing his feelings after watching the inaugural show of the play 'Trident Moon', said that Afroza Banui will probably be the first actress to sign a contract with a mainstream theater in Canada and start acting in such a play. Congratulations to Belly Apa."
