Renowned political scientist Professor Ali Riaz has been elected as the President of the American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (AIBS) for the second time in a row.
Professor Rebecca Manring was re-elected as Vice President. They have been elected for the term 2024-28. Its secretary Professor Dina Siddiqui conducted the election as the chairman of the nomination committee. The organization's presidential election was held in May and the vice presidential election was held last month.
28 such universities of the United States researching Bangladesh are members and voters of AIBS. 25 universities in Bangladesh are partners (not voters) of AIBS. AIBS is an association of higher education institutions in the United States that organizes faculty exchanges, fellowships, research programs and publications, lectureships, seminars, and conferences between the United States and Bangladeshi partner universities for professional development.
Established in 1988, the State Department and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh have been providing annual grants for the operation of AIBS. It is known that the professors who have a relationship with the ruling government of Bangladesh get a grant of 140,000 per year only when they are in the leadership of AIBS. The current chief advisor of the interim government is the Nobel Prize winner. It is believed that AIBS activities will also gain momentum as the relationship of Professor Ali Riaz and Professor Dina Siddiqui with Muhammad Yunus is excellent.
