Bangladeshis have fought as candidates in the general election of the United Kingdom. A total of 34 people of Bangladeshi origin competed in the election of last Thursday, including eight from the Labor Party, two from the Conservative Party and as independent candidates. Among them, Rushnara Ali, Rupa Haque, Tulip Siddique and Apsana Begum are going to the British Parliament with huge victories. However, out of 34 Bangladeshi-origin candidates, none other than four could win.
Rushnara Ali: In 2010, Rushnara Ali entered the UK Parliament as the first Bangladeshi. He was elected Member of Parliament for Bethnalgreen and Bow in Tower Hamlets. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for five consecutive times from that seat. However, due to the change in the boundaries this time, he has been elected from Bethnalgreen and Stepney constituency with 15 thousand 896 votes and is going to the Parliament as a Member of Parliament for the fifth time.
Rushnara Ali was born in Sylhet. He moved to the UK with his family at the age of seven. He graduated in philosophy, politics and economics from St. John's College, Oxford. Rushnara Ali has been serving as Shadow Minister for International Development since 2010. He was then appointed Shadow Minister of State for Education in October 2013.
Tulip Siddique: Bangabandhu's granddaughter and Sheikh Rehana's daughter Tulip Siddique is going to the British Parliament for the fourth consecutive time after winning a huge vote. He won the Labor Party nomination from Hampstead and Highgate in south-west London by 23,432 votes. And his nearest rival Don Williams of the Conservative Party got 8 thousand 462 votes.
As always, British politics and tulips are of great interest to Bangladeshis living in Britain. This election was no exception. After announcing the results, Tulip Siddique said, 'Congratulations to everyone. With your prayers, I was elected for the fourth time. Our Bangladeshi community has always helped and supported me. I am very grateful, they have supported me this time too.'
