A Bangladeshi immigrant died mysteriously in police custody in Athens, the capital of Greece. The 29-year-old name is Khalis Mia. The Omonia police station in Greece claims that the intoxicated young man was arrested and kept in the cell at night. The next morning the policemen found the arrested person hanging. The Bangladesh embassy and immigration agencies in Athens have demanded a fair investigation into the mysterious incident. Regarding this, according to the police commentary in various newspapers in Greece, the news that a Bangladeshi immigrant has died after being hanged in the police station has been published.
It is known that Khalis Mia, son of Jalal Uddin of Chatak Upazila of Sunamganj District, was arrested from the Omonia area of Athens by the Omonia police station on September 30 night. Police said that he was found hanging in the police cell on Tuesday morning. There were 11 other prisoners.
Greek police confirmed that the death of the migrant had been reported to the prosecutor in Athens. Besides, a medical examiner and a unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation visited the spot to investigate the death.
Anwar Hossain Dewan, president of Bangladesh Community in Greece, said, "When a local lawyer and community leaders asked the police at the police station, the police told them that the police arrested him and took him to the police station after a fight in Patia Vathis (where there are many Bangladeshi businesses). On the way into the police station, he kicked the door of the car and broke the glass window of the police car. Being intoxicated, the police took him directly to the court without questioning. The next morning the police on duty found him dead.'
